Moving is a troublesome business! It is not for nothing that popular wisdom warns that two such events are equal to one fire. Probably because of the losses caused: something broke, fell apart, crushed, failed, got lost… In most cases, this happened only because things were not prepared.
The most obvious decision still will be hiring a reliable mover who knows packing hacks and is experienced enough to move fragile things. Google movers near me and ask for a Quote. Expenses are always disappointing but using tools like approximate moving cost calculator or numerous apps will help you to plan and even save your money. If you still decided to pack your own things by yourself, get ready for this troublesome business very thoroughly.
To collect everything for the move, you will have to stock up:
- a large number of cardboard boxes of different sizes;
- strong adhesive tape;
- wrapping paper or newspapers;
- soft cloth, flannel;
- air-bubble wrap;
- large and not very large plastic and plastic bags.
Also prepare a marker to sign the boxes that are already packed.
When moving, do not immediately grab the dishes and fragile products. First, you need to collect and pack oversized, durable things: books, clothes, bed linen. Last of all-appliances, furniture, large items. The most valuable thing – with you!
Separately, you need to pack and transport documents, bank cards, money, and jewelry. Do not forget to collect the necessary medicines and keep them with you.
Rule of Thumb
It applies to the weight of the packed box: it should not exceed 30 kg. But there is not always a piano in the bushes when moving, and the scales are at hand. Try to move the box with your thumb. Didn’t work out? Then unpack it and move a few things to the next one, so that you can at least move it a little with your thumb.
The correct sequence of packaging is the key to a high-quality move
First, try to pack everything from the cabinets. Curtains, blankets, tablecloths, bed linen and other voluminous fabric products can be collected in plastic bags. Do not forget to sign the packages where you put the towels and bed, because on arrival they will be needed first.
Then start packing your books
Put them in a stack of 15-20 pieces, wrap with thick paper. So you will protect the delicate corners of the books. And the brochures should be packed in stacks, the height of which should not exceed 45 cm. Do the same with the disks.
Put everything carefully in a cardboard box. If there are voids, be sure to fill them with crumpled newspapers, flannel, and bubble wrap. Seal each box with duct tape. If you doubt its strength, tape the seams with tape.
It was the turn for clothes and shoes
When moving, pack your demi-season, summer clothes in suitcases, travel bags or large bags. Are there things you can’t crumple? Protect them with plastic, fabric covers and place them in large boxes, if it is not possible to transport them by hanging them on hangers.
Now it’s time to collect the kitchen utensils
Wrap sharp objects in thick cardboard, place them in a box so that they can not damage it. At the bottom, do not forget to lay a layer of old newspapers, foam. Transfer the dishes, glass, crystal with an air-bubble film, thin cardboard. If this material is not enough, soft fabric, towels, flannel will do.
Very carefully put things in the box, fill the empty spaces with soft packaging material. In case of shaking or falling, thanks to the cushioning of the correct packaging, you will keep delicate and glass objects intact. Crystal glasses, figurines, chandeliers and other fragile items can be put in plastic containers, wrapping each one separately.
Make sure to sign the boxes so that the movers handle them carefully!
And rewind the pots, pans and other kitchen utensils with newspapers, so as not to scratch the surface, put them in bags.
If possible, disassemble the furniture, sign the panels, put them in large boxes, wrapping them with air-bubble wrap or stretch film. Place the corrugated cardboard sheets under the table. Select a bag for small accessories: nuts, fasteners, handles, screws. If you decide not to disassemble the furniture, glue all the drawers and doors with tape. Mirrors, glass doors, paintings need to be packed in cardboard sheets, tied with tape.
Packing boxes with things
Leave household appliances “for a snack”, because it needs to be packed very carefully. Defrost the refrigerator at least a day before moving. It is better to transport the equipment in its native packaging, secured with foam. Replace it with flannel or bubble wrap.
Do not leave a free space between the walls, but fill it with either old crumpled newspapers or the same film. Attach the documents to each device. If the box is not a store-bought one, be sure to specify the bottom and top of the item.
Books, clothes, do not stack with coloring, oily substances, even if everything is perfectly wrapped and corked. Do not put food products in the same box with household chemicals. Place fragile items away from sharp objects. Separately pack flammable substances, lacquers, and solvents.
